(Cardiff) Wide-ranging collection covering archaeology, natural history, industry, social history and art, with special emphasis on the development of Wales. In the field of ceramics there is a fine collection of Nantgawr and Swansea wares, and leading Welsh painters (in particular Richard *Wilson, Thomas *Jones, Augustus and Gwen *John) are well represented. The Davies Bequest of 1951 brought some excellent 19C French paintings, of which Renoir's full-length Parisian Girl is the best known. The classical-style building, by Smith and Brewer, has been opened in stages since 1922, and the museum has developed several branches in other locations, in particular the *Welsh Folk Museum and the *Welsh Industrial and Maritime Museum.
