Member of the *Commonwealth since 1990. This coastal region in southwest Africa was a German protectorate from 1880 to 1915. After World War I it was administered by South Africa, a situation which provoked international opposition and local unrest in the 1970s. In 1988 an agreement was reached for South African troops to be withdrawn in return for the simultaneous ending of the Cuban presence in Angola, to the north. Namibia decided to join the Commonwealth on becoming independent.
