Murder in the Cathedral
|
|
(1935) Poetic drama by T.S. *Eliot, commissioned for performance in the chapter house of Canterbury Cathedral. The play focuses on the inner conflict of Thomas *Becket as he contemplates martyrdom (the fear of pride in such a fate holds him back). The women of Canterbury, forming a chorus, discover a new self-awareness through his example. At the end the four assassins address the audience, using modern political arguments in self-justification.
