The 277 mountain peaks in Scotland which are above 3000 feet (914m). They are named after a Victorian eccentric, Hugh Thomas Munro (1856–1919), who published a list of them in 1891. It has become a familiar challenge among enthusiasts to climb all 277. Munro himself died with one still to go, but it is said that some 800 people have completed the entire list. The best-known contender in recent years has been John *Smith, who had climbed 108 of the peaks by the time of his death.
