(1878–1959, kt 1944) Painter of horses and of racecourse scenes, who shared with the *Newlyn school a commitment to painting out of doors. He is remembered as a controversial figure because as president of the Royal Academy he used his speech at the annual dinner, in 1949, to attack all forms of modern art. His house at Dedham in Essex is kept as a museum.
