Muirfield
|
|
Golf course on the coast east of Edinburgh. It belongs to the world's oldest *golf club, the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, founded in 1744 as the Gentlemen Golfers of Leith. It was they who established the first rules of the game. They played until 1836 on the links at Leith, then moved east for a while to Musselburgh and in 1891 east again to Muirfield. The course at Muirfield was laid out by Tom Morris Snr, winner of four *Opens in the first eight years of the contest. It was on his new course at Muirfield that the first 72-hole Open was played in 1892, and it has remained one of the regular locations for the championship.
