Lord Mountbatten
|
|
(Louis Mountbatten, 1900–79, KCVO 1922, Earl Mountbatten 1947) Uncle of the duke of Edinburgh and cousin of Elizabeth II (through his maternal grandmother, a daughter of Queen Victoria). In 1943 he became Supreme Allied Commander of South East Asia and established his base in Ceylon for the recapture of Burma and Malaya. In 1947 he was viceroy of *India at the time of partition, and he stayed on into 1948 as governor general. He was murdered in 1979 by an IRA bomb concealed in his fishing boat off the west coast of Ireland. His family name was Battenberg, changed in 1917 to a literal English translation because of anti-German sentiments during World War I. He was known to his family and friends as 'Dickie', though not one of his five Christian names was Richard.
