The government agency which manufactures the coins of the realm (see *currency), with records dating back to the reign of Alfred the Great in the 9C. From 1300 to 1810 it operated within the Tower of London, and then in a building nearby on Tower Hill. It has now moved to Llantrisant in Mid Glamorgan, where coins were first minted in 1968. The chancellor of the exchequer has been since 1870 the ex officio master of the mint.
