Former *county to the northwest of London which ceased to exist, except in postal addresses and in various county activities such as cricket matches, when it was wholly absorbed in 1965 within *Greater London. Its name goes back to *Anglo-Saxon times, when it lay in the 'middle' between the East Saxons of Essex and the West Saxons of Wessex.
