(144,000 in 1991) Port and industrial town on the south bank of the Tees estuary; administrative centre of Cleveland. It developed rapidly from a tiny fishing village when the *Stockton and Darlington railway was extended to the coast in 1830. Export of coal from the Durham mines brought the first growth, boosted by the discovery in the 1850s of iron ore in the Cleveland Hills. The Dorman Museum tells the history of the area's development; the city's Art Gallery has specialized in British painting of the 20C; and a little to the south, at Marton, Captain Cook's birthplace is kept as a museum.
