Meteor
|
|
The only jet aircraft in service with the Allied forces in World War II. The first Gloster Meteor, powered by a Whittle engine and with a top speed of 670kph/415mph, was delivered to the RAF in July 1944. Meteors spent the rest of that year pursuing *V1s over Britain (but only shooting down 13 in all). The first German jet, the Messerschmitt Me 262, also entered service in 1944 (before the Meteor).
