(1764–1836) Jewish pugilist, from the days of bare-knuckle fights, who became the first British boxer to be widely remembered. He had a more scientific approach than his predecessors, writing a short book on the subject (The Art of Boxing 1789) and following this with his memoirs (1816). He was British champion 1791–5.
