Menai Strait

Channel separating *Anglesey from Wales. Its narrowest point (about 185m/200yd wide, at the northeast end near Bangor) has been crossed by two historically important bridges. The road bridge, built 1819–26 by Thomas *Telford, was the first suspension bridge to be attempted on this scale. Nearby is the Britannia railway bridge (1846–50), in which Robert *Stephenson pioneered his box-girder or tubular design (severely damaged by fire in 1970, it has been rebuilt with a road above the railway). A pair of similar but shorter bridges, by the same two engineers, carry road and rail across the river at *Conwy.
