(60km/37m SE of Edinburgh) Small town, on the river Tweed, which was a monastic site from the first Celtic settlement in the 7C to the final days of the *Cistercian abbey, established by David I in 1136 and destroyed by the English in 1545. The present extensive ruins date from the 14–15C. Part of the abbey's attraction is the romantic tradition that the heart of *Robert the Bruce lies buried here, where the high altar once stood beneath the east window.
