(64km/40m SE of Edinburgh) House begun for the Baillie family by William *Adam in 1725. He provided only the two wings, which remained disconnected until his son Robert was commissioned in about 1770 to complete the house. He gave it the castellated roofline which was then coming into fashion. The interiors, in particular the library, are outstanding examples of the *Adam style.
