MCC

(Marylebone Cricket Club) Club founded in 1787, with its headquarters at *Lord's, which rapidly became the accepted authority in *cricket (a role in which it succeeded the *Hambledon club). With the development of county cricket its importance as a playing club reduced, and in 1877 it persuaded the *Middlesex County Cricket Club to share its ground. In the late 19C the MCC administered the *county championship and *Test matches in England, and from the early 20C the club selected and managed teams playing for England abroad (Test teams travelled as the MCC until 1977). In 1968 these administrative roles were taken on by the Cricket Council and the Test and County Cricket Board (which meet at Lord's), but the MCC remains responsible for the laws of cricket.
