Island in the Indian ocean, about 880km/550m east of Madagascar, which has been a member of the *Commonwealth since 1968. Though visited by Portuguese and Dutch ships, it was not permanently inhabited until the French settled it in the early 18C with African slaves to work sugar plantations. It was captured by Britain in 1810 during the *Napoleonic wars, was ceded in 1814 by the treaty of Paris, and became independent in 1968.
