Master of the Queen's (or King's) Music
|
|
Royal appointment for life, carrying a token salary and a vague obligation to provide a piece of music from time to time for a state occasion. Originally the appointment was as director of the monarch's private orchestra. The first incumbent was Nicholas Lanier, who held the post for Charles I from 1626 and for Charles II from 1660.
