A sociological enterprise launched in 1937. Described as 'an anthropology of ourselves', its aim was to gather a wealth of everyday detail about the British. It was based primarily on interviews and questionnaires, but people were also encouraged to keep diaries. The original survey lasted until the late 1940s. The undertaking was revived in 1981 under the auspices of the university of Sussex, and at the turn of the century there were some 600 regular contributors supplying written material about their daily lives.
