(1909–84) Actor who became a major star of British films in the 1940s, in particular with The Man in Grey (1943), The Seventh Veil (1945) and *Odd Man Out (1947). Subsequent roles included two ageing men lusting after younger women, in Georgy Girl (1966) and – a more extreme case – Lolita (1962).
