One of the best-known nursery rhymes in Britain, but in origin a poem written for children in 1830 by an American author, Sara Josepha Hale (1788–1879). Based on a real incident, the narrative has a simple consistency quite unlike the surrealist folk ingredients of traditional nursery rhymes.
