Martello Towers
|
|
Circular stone towers, with room for a garrison inside and two guns on top, built along the south coast from Beachy Head to Folkestone as defence against invasion in the *Napoleonic Wars. Of the original 74, 27 are still intact. The design and the name derived from a similar tower at Mortella in Corsica, where the French had put up an effective resistance to British bombardment in 1794.
