Established in 1963 by Fanny Waterman and Marion Harewood (now Thorpe), and held every three years. It is open to professional pianists under the age of 30. The semi-finals (solo piano) and the finals (piano concertos) are in the Leeds Town Hall, and the finals are seen on television; in recent years the orchestra has been the CBSO under Simon Rattle. Past winners have included Radu Lupu in 1969 and Murray Perahia in 1972.
