Margaret, the Maid of Norway
|
|
(c.1282–90) Queen of Scotland from 1286, inheriting the throne because her deceased mother had been the daughter of *Alexander III. Her father was king of Norway, and she sailed from Norway at the age of eight after a marriage had been arranged with the son of Edward I of England. She died during the journey, in the Orkneys, thus ending a stable dynasty which had stretched back to *Malcolm III two centuries earlier (see the *royal house of Scotland).
