The main international airport for the Midlands and north of England, and the busiest in the country after *Heathrow and *Gatwick. Manchester became in 1929 the first British municipality to have its own licensed aerodrome, which was moved in 1939 to the present site at Ringway. A major new terminal was opened in 1962, capable of dealing with 2.5 million passengers a year; it was the first in Europe where the passengers could walk all the way to the aircraft under cover.
On 22 August 1985 a British Airtours Boeing 737 burst into flames at Manchester when taking off for Corfu, resulting in 55 deaths.
