Malcolm III
|
|
(also called Malcolm Canmore, c.1031–93) King of Scotland from 1057, founder of a dynasty which ruled for more than 200 years (see the *royal house of Scotland). He was the son of *Duncan I, and he secured the throne after killing *Macbeth in battle at Lumphanan, near Aberdeen (not at Dunsinane as in *Macbeth). In a life of almost constant warfare, with frequent expeditions into northern England, he established Scotland as a strong kingdom, though he did homage to *William I in 1072 and to *William II in 1091. He was killed in an ambush near Alnwick on one of his raids south. In about 1070 he married Margaret, later St *Margaret of Scotland. Three of their sons succeeded to the throne, the first being *Edgar.
