(91,000 in 1991) County town and administrative centre of Kent, on the river Medway. On the bank of the river is the 14–15C church of All Saints, in the *Perpendicular style. Nearby stood the medieval palace of the archbishops of Canterbury, much adapted when it became a private house in the Elizabethan period; the surviving 14C stable block now houses a collection of horse-drawn carriages. The Museum and Art Gallery, founded in 1858 and occupying the mainly 16C Chillington Manor, has a broadly based collection of archaeology, decorative arts and painting.
