(1793–1873) Actor who in his early years was the only rival to Edmund *Kean. As manager at different times of both *Covent Garden and *Drury Lane he greatly improved standards, insisting on increased rehearsal time with the entire cast and not just the leading players, so that a production came together as a whole – something taken for granted now but unusual then.
