Iain Macleod
|
|
(1913–70) Conservative politician, MP for Enfield West from 1950, who was the first chancellor of the exchequer in Edward Heath's government of 1970, holding office for only a month before he died of a heart attack. An articulate member of the liberal wing of the party, Macleod speeded up the independence of the African colonies when he was colonial secretary (1959–61) under Macmillan, but in doing so he offended the right wing of his party and damaged his own leadership chances.
