Charles Rennie Mackintosh

|
(1868–1928) Scottish architect and designer. After studying at the Glasgow School of Art he won in 1894 the competition for their new building, the first part of which opened in 1899 and brought him immediate fame. It is considered the earliest *Art Nouveau building in Britain. Meanwhile he had begun designing interiors and furniture for a series of Glasgow tea rooms (eventually four) owned by Miss Cranston.

The angular and elongated chairs (the comfort of her patrons was not his first consideration) were in keeping with the furniture he designed for his own house, several rooms of which are now in the *Hunterian Museum; equally characteristic interiors survive in the *Hill House. In the quirkily refined and geometrical nature of his work, and in his muted colour schemes, he prefigured much in 20C design. He was invited to exhibit at the Secession show in Vienna in 1900.
