Lundy

Rocky island, 5km/3m long, lying 19km/12m off the north coast of Devon. It was originally a pirate island, but the 13C castle was built for *Henry III; there are 19C houses, cottages, lighthouses and a church. Owned by the *National Trust since 1969, it is administered by the *Landmark Trust. Lunde is the Old Norse word for a puffin, and puffins still breed on the island.
