(9000 in 1991) Hillside town in Shropshire notable for its profusion of excellent houses of the 16–18C, many of them in Broad Street. The Feathers Hotel, in the Bull Ring, is outstanding among the half-timber buildings. The castle, one of the great fortresses of the *Marches but a ruin since the 18C, was begun in the late 11C to hold down the Welsh. In 1634 *Milton's Comus, a pastoral entertainment with music, was performed in the castle to welcome a new president of Wales and the Marches.
