Leader of the House of Commons
|
|
Member of the cabinet responsible for the conduct of business in the House of *Commons. The office emerged in the 19C during those periods when the prime minister was a member of the House of *Lords. At other times the function was carried out by the prime minister himself, until in World War II Churchill delegated the task to a cabinet minister. On Thursdays the leader announces the business of the House for the following week. The leader of the House of Lords, also in the cabinet, fulfils a similar function in the upper chamber. Each office has usually been combined with that of lord president of the Council or lord privy seal.
