Lord Privy Seal
|
|
A high office of state to which appointments are still made even though it no longer bears any specific responsibilities. It dates back to the 13C when the holder was in charge of the king's private seal (used in transacting royal business) and therefore had great power. In the mid-20C it was used as a cabinet appointment for a minister carrying out a specific and perhaps temporary task. More recently it has gone with the job of either *leader of the House of Lords or leader of the House of Commons. For holders of the office since 1983 see the *cabinet.
