The Lord of the Rings
|
|
(1954–5) Sequel by *Tolkien to his children's book, The *Hobbit. It developed into an epic for adults occupying three volumes, The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King. The characters of the earlier book reappear, but the hobbit hero this time in the long fight against evil is Frodo. Set in Middle-Earth, a fantasy world imagined in astonishing detail (lengthy appendices explain its chronology, genealogy and etymology), the book rapidly became a cult, selling millions of copies in many languages.
