Lord of the Flies
|
|
(1954) The first published novel by William *Golding, inspired by *Coral Island but taking a more jaundiced modern view of what would actually happen in an isolated community of small boys. In this version the well-meaning efforts of Ralph and Peterkin (the latter transformed into the fat boy and victim, Piggy) are powerless against the ferocious dictatorship of Jack when they are all stranded on an island after an air crash. The lord of the flies (a literal translation of the Hebrew name for the devil, Beelzebub) is here a fly-blown pig's head, turned by the boys into an object of worship.
