Lord Lieutenant
|
|
The representative of the sovereign in a *county, appointed until retirement at the age of 75. The office was introduced in the 16C, originally to take over the military duties of the *high sheriff; the lord lieutenant became chief executive and magistrate of the district and remained responsible for the *militia until 1871. The office is now largely ceremonial, mainly in connection with royal visits, but it does still involve the recommendation of local justices of the peace.
