Lonrho
|
|
(now trading as Lonmin) Company founded in 1909 as the London and Rhodesian Mining and Land Company; the name was changed to Lonrho in 1963 and to Lonmin in 1998. From the 1970s Lonrho expanded under a colourful chief executive, Tiny Rowland, to become one of Britain's largest companies, with worldwide interests in manufacturing, agricultural and service industries (including even newspapers – the Observer was bought in 1981). From 1985 Rowland waged a bitter public vendetta against the Al-Fayed brothers over the manner in which they purchased *Harrods (defeating a bid from Lonrho, which had been delayed by the involvement of the Department of Trade and Industry).
