Thomas Lawrence
|
|
(1769–1830, kt 1815) The leading portrait painter of the generation after *Reynolds and *Gainsborough, noted for the ease and rapidity of his style. He was astonishingly precocious and was only 21 when commissioned to do the portrait of Queen Charlotte, now in the National Gallery. The image in the public mind of the prince regent, the future *George IV, derives almost entirely from Lawrence's fluent brush.
