(London W1) Theatre which opened in 1910, with a lavish interior by Frank Matcham (1854–1920) and the novelty of box-to-box telephones. It was intended for *music hall and variety and has remained London's main theatre for such entertainment – topping the bill at the Palladium being a yardstick of success. Sunday Night at the London Palladium (ATV 1955–65) was an extremely popular television show, consisting of an hour of variety transmitted live each week. Tommy Trinder and Bruce Forsyth were the best known of the comperes.
