Laura Ashley
|
|
Company based in Wales, designing and manufacturing clothes, fabrics and furnishings which conform to a traditional country style. It derived from small beginnings in 1953; on a kitchen table in a London flat Bernard Ashley (b. 1926) started printing scarves and other small items designed by his wife Laura (1925–85). The family moved to Wales in 1961 and the first Laura Ashley shop was opened in London in 1968. By 1990 there were nearly 500 worldwide, though the company was by then showing signs of being over-extended. Meanwhile the Laura Ashley look, reassuringly old-fashioned, had profoundly influenced the interior decoration of many British homes.
