London Bridge
|
|
Bridge crossing the Thames a few hundred yards upstream from the Tower of London. A wooden bridge was built here by the *Romans soon after AD 43. The first stone bridge was begun in 1176. Lasting for some 650 years, with tall, narrow houses built upon it, it became one of the most famous sights of London. It was replaced in 1831 by a bridge designed by John *Rennie, which in the 1960s was dismantled and reconstructed in Arizona as a tourist attraction. The present bridge was completed in 1972.
