Lollards
|
|
The followers of the heretical ideas of John *Wycliffe (c.1330–84). In the early years there were many prominent Lollards, most notably Sir John Oldcastle, but after his execution in 1417 the movement went underground. It survived, particularly among skilled craftsmen, and surfaced again to contribute to the *Reformation. The name derived from a Dutch word for 'mumblers', used of heretics and relating probably to the mumbling of prayers.
