One of the *clearing banks, founded in Birmingham in 1765 by a *Unitarian button maker, John Taylor (1711–75), and a *Quaker ironmaster, Sampson Lloyd (1699–1779). In 1771 the sons of the founders established a separate enterprise in London which was not absorbed into the older bank until 1884. The London company was then at a Lombard Street address which had been associated with banking since 1677 and was identified by the sign of a black horse – the beginning of the Lloyds link with this now widely featured animal. Lloyd's merged in 1999 with *TSB to form Lloyds TSB.
