Llywelyn ap Gruffudd
|
|
(d. 1282) Grandson of *Llywelyn ab Iorwerth who reasserted his family's authority in *Wales after an intervening period of disorder. By 1258 he was in a position to receive the homage of the other Welsh leaders and to proclaim himself Prince of *Wales, a dignity in which he was the first to be recognized by England (in 1267). Welsh independence did not long survive the accession of *Edward I. Resisting demands to submit to the English crown, Llywelyn died in battle in 1282. He was briefly succeeded by his brother David ap Gruffudd (d. 1283), but it was Llywelyn's death which brought Wales finally under English domination.
