(15,000 in 1991) The largest resort in Wales, on the north coast of Gwynedd. It developed with the arrival of the *railway in the mid-19C, providing holidays for the new industrial towns of the Midlands and the north of England. The long curving beach of the bay is flanked by two limestone headlands. The larger, Great Orme, is at the western end; it can be ascended by tram, funicular railway or cable car, and it has at its foot the traditional Victorian *seaside pier.
