Lions
|
|
(British Lions) The name given to *rugby teams representing the British Isles, including Ireland; they turn out in red shirts, white shorts and blue socks with green tops (a colour for each of the four home countries). The name has been in use since at least 1950, but is traditionally said (without contemporary evidence) to date back to the team which toured South Africa in 1924 and to derive from the lion symbol on their ties.
