Linlithgow

(12,000 in 1991)
Town in Lothian, site of the ruined but impressive Linlithgow Palace, which in appearance is more of a castle. The present structure was begun in 1425 by *James I, after a fire had destroyed previous buildings on the site, and it was completed in the following century by *James V; his daughter, *Mary Queen of Scots, was born here in 1542. The palace was accidentally burnt in 1746 when troops of the duke of *Cumberland were camping in it. The adjacent church of St Michael (15–16C, in the *Decorated style) was also begun by James I on an earlier foundation.
