Lindisfarne Gospels
|
|
(British Library) Illuminated Latin manuscript of the four Gospels. A note added on the last page, and believed to be accurate, says that the book was written in honour of St *Cuthbert by Eadfrith, who was bishop on *Lindisfarne from 698 to 721. Cuthbert's body, exhumed in 698, was found to be uncorrupted, greatly adding to his reputation for sanctity, and this event may have prompted the creation of the manuscript. It is notable for combining Celtic decoration with a Byzantine convention of figure painting, seen in the images of the evangelists; and for the complex interlace patterns of its so-called carpet pages.
