Liberty's

|
(London W1) Shop founded in 1875 by Arthur Liberty (1843–1917, kt 1913), which had great influence on fashion in the late 19C, particularly in popularizing *Art Nouveau. Liberty first specialized in oriental wares (reflected in the roofline frieze on the present building of 1924–5, which shows goods travelling by camel and elephant towards an image of Britannia), before becoming personally involved with the *Arts and Crafts movement. A famous outcome of this interest was the Liberty tradition of hand-printed fabrics; the emphasis in the early years was on silks, but the range was soon extended to cotton fabrics for furnishing and clothes.
